Polo Custom Products Acquires Foarm Following Function

Topeka, KS, August 2010. Polo Custom Products, a division of M-C Industries, Inc., announces the acquisition of Foarm Following Function, Inc. in Santa Barbara, California.

Foarm, like Polo, specializes in custom thermoforming using fabrics, foam, and flexible or rigid plastic materials. Foarm filed the original patent for the thermoforming process. Their vast experience and knowledge in tooling design and thermoformed product development are advantageous to Polo as well as their domestic manufacturing operations.

As a result of the merger, Polo adds the following competitive advantages for thermoformed products:

  • Advanced product design & development capability
  • In-house tooling design & creation
  • The capability to produce prototypes with quick response time
  • U.S. manufacturing for short or long runs

Adding these advantages to Polo’s already extensive capabilities of in-house design and engineering, primary and secondary manufacturing process expertise, multiple U.S. manufacturing locations, global raw materials sourcing, market intelligence, and Asian manufacturing partnerships, exemplifies Polo’s commitment to be a TOTAL Source manufacturer.

At a little over 105,000 square feet, our new facility is nearly three times larger than our prior MS location and it is able to accommodate new equipment and future expansion. The new building will house sewing and peripheral operation production lines and warehousing for imported products. One advantage of the much larger space is having enough room for our brand new Lectra computerized material cutting and transfer system. Polo now has two Lectra cutting machines. Our Monticello, IA plant has used the Lectra system for several years now. We've found it to be a very valuable tool. We are able to cut material faster, more accurately, and with less waste than ever before.

Polo Custom Products announces a New Capability . . . Thermoforming of Fabrics and Foam.

Topeka, KS, October 2006. Polo Custom Products is pleased to offer custom thermoformed fabric and foam products to our customers. Demand for thermoformed products for the industries in which our customers operate has increased. The capability is a natural complement to our extensive custom sewing and RF welding capabilities.

Thermoforming is a method of processing flat material into a finished 3-dimensional shape. The process begins with fabric laminated to one or both sides of foam. This laminate is then placed in a two-piece mold to form the necessary shape. Heat and pressure are applied, permanently molding the laminate into the desired semi-rigid part.

As with custom sewn products, thermoformed products have the same personalization options and hardware options. Thermoformed products can have logos and artwork attached. Molded vinyl logos, woven labels, or embroidered patterns that can be sewn onto a product work best. There are virtually no limitations for hardware attachments. Zippers, snaps, rivets, buttons, hook and loop, etc. can all be incorporated into the product design.

Typical Applications for Thermoformed Products

Thermoformed product applications are practically unlimited.

  • Cases: Instrument, Consumer Electronics, Medical, Computer, Tool, Audio Visual
  • Holsters: Gun, Baton, Flashlight, Portable Testing/Detecting/Sampling Instrument
  • Liners/Dividers: Compartment, Glove Box, Console, Carrying Case, Helmet
  • Pouches: First Aid, Occupational Tools/Instruments
  • Pad Assemblies: Harness, Support, Protection

Advantages of Thermoformed Products

  1. Protection - Thermoformed products are semi-rigid. They can help protect your products from impact, dust, sun, moisture, and other environmental factors.
  2. Attractive Style - Thermoformed products have a smooth, contoured, wrinkle-free look. Stylish hardware and artwork can be added for styling and additional visual appeal.
  3. Custom Fit - Thermoformed products can be molded into the exact shapes desired for your components. Also, die cut foam or molded plastic inserts can be added for extra protection of instruments. Dedicated instrument cavities can also be formed into the product.
  4. Light Weight - Thermoformed products are easily transported.
  5. Lower Tooling Cost - In most applications, thermoformed product tooling is less expensive than blow molded or injection molded tooling.
